Name of event: NuIEEE Camp

From the 11th to the 12th of February, the IEEE Porto Student Branch organized an ambitious trip with the objective of developing friendships, visit cities and other student branches, and generally have a well-deserved good time.

This year, we have experienced something like never before: a steep growth in our ranks, with new members joining our Student Branch every month. The board then decided that we needed some way for older members to get more in touch with newer ones, as well as develop soft-skills which could help in future endeavours, and so the NUIEEE Camp was devised.

The plan consisted in spending most of the Saturday in Guimarães, were we joined up with the kind people of IEEE UMinho Student Branch and underwent some team-building activities led by Gonçalo Carito and Catarina Rodrigues, trainers from Lisbon. Self-awareness and strategic planning, how to communicate as a group, how to give feedback and getting to know more about the inner workings of the IEEE in region 8 were the main topics of discussion and what felt we could improve upon the most with these sessions. We also had some time in-between the sessions to walk to the centre of the city and buy some local snacks. Then, after dinner, we rode to Ponte de Lima, where we had booked in advanced our stay for the night. That same night, we got time to talk to everyone, as we explored the nightlife and the mains streets of that beautiful little town.

On Sunday morning, we once again had some training waiting for us, this time related with public speaking, what drives us to better ourselves and our motivations and plans while in the IEEE Student Branch. This last topic was of great importance to the current board because there is a necessity of forming next year’s board, and they wanted to grow a solid team with ambitious plans for the SB. Then on the afternoon we returned to Porto with the sense of accomplishment in our minds.

As we arrived, everyone spoke to one another about their opinions of the Camp and we all agreed on one thing: this experience is something worth repeating next year because the bonds we grew this year will be something the next generation should live as well in order to really feel this family that is the Porto IEEE Student Branch.
